Periodontal Examinations for Our Patients

Periodontal DiseaseWe wanted to take a moment to make you aware of a recently published statement from the American Academy of Periodontology on the elements that should comprise effective and efficient periodontal therapy.

Please click on this link to view the article: Comprehensive Periodontal Therapy: A Statement by the American Academy of Periodontology

This statement provides perspective into what comprehensive periodontal therapy should entail, and details the various components that should be included in periodontal treatment, such as:

•       Scope of Periodontal Therapy

•       Periodontal Evaluation

•       Establishing a Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment Plan

•       Informed Consent and Patient Records

•       Treatment Procedures

•       Evaluation of Therapy

•       Factors Modifying Results

•       Periodontal Maintenance Therapy

Of particular note is the statement’s expectation that all patients should receive a comprehensive periodontal evaluation, including an analysis of risk factors, on an annual basis. With recent research indicating that the prevalence of periodontal disease in the United States may have been significantly underestimated, it is more critical than ever to carefully monitor and appropriately manage our patients’ periodontal health.

We encourage you to post your comments/questions so we can have a discussion as to what the statement means for how we collaborate on the patients we treat. However, if you prefer, please contact our office at (206-329-0410) or email: kvnsuzuki@gmail.com.

By working together we will be able to help patients achieve both periodontal, and overall, health.
